  • 12 November 2026. ALA, Monte Estoril. 18.00 for 18.30. John Iglar will talk on Prehistoric Portugal. Since arriving in Portugal five years ago, John has set about studying the country's numerous neolithic and more recent prehistoric sites, producing a series of excellent YouTube videos on megalithic dolmens, stone circles, and castros.

In this newsletter we look again at the noted author, Eça de Queirós, who was Portuguese consul in Newcastle in the 1870s. Joe Fean explores how that city could have influenced some of Eça’s novels. The second article, by the late Richard Tennant, is on the Loyal Lusitanian Legion, a British army unit  that fought in the Peninsular War. We also have a review of The Return, a novel by Dulce Maria Cardoso, which describes the experiences of over half a million Portuguese citizens in the Portuguese colonies who returned to Portugal after the Carnation Revolution. We also look at the British contribution to early railway construction in Portugal.
