"Portugal Before Portus Cale": Talk on Portugal's prehistory by John Iglar (12 Nov 2026)

Portugal has a rich history of exploration and empire, invasion and resistance. Books have been written, videos have been made, and stories have been told. But long before the written history, Portugal had a vast and fascinating story that has only been told quietly through lesser-known channels.

John Iglar, a former teacher who arrived in Portugal in 2018, has made it his mission to tell this story. Through his website and video channel, Prehistoric Portugal, he is shining a light on the millennia of Portuguese heritage from the prehistoric period, some of which can still be seen today.

In Portugal Before Portus Cale, on Thursday, 12 November, at ALA, Avenida Castelhana 13, in Monte Estoril, John will take you on a journey through the Stone Age and the Age of Metals, highlighting locations and discoveries from Portugal’s history before History.

We will meet for drinks at 18.00 and John's talk will begin at 18.30. There will be a nominal charge of €5 (€10 for non-members), collected at the door, to include wine and cheese.

After the talk you will be welcome to join some of the Council members for dinner at the nearby Adega do Monte restaurant.
