Talk on ‘Nicholas Trant: The Forgotten Hero of Portugal’ (26 Sep 2026)

Local historian Tim Richardson will give a talk on the life of Nicholas Trant, who played a pivotal role during the French Invasions of Portugal during the Peninsular War (1807-1814). Based on Tim’s recently published book, ‘Forgetting Nicholas Trant’ (Sitio do Livro, 2026), the talk will be based on previously unresearched documents and family contributions. It will cover Nicholas Trant’s many feats as well as speculating why his name today has been largely forgotten – despite commanding the Portuguese forces at Roliça and Vimeiro, liberating Coimbra from the French (twice) and being Governor of Porto for five years.

Light refreshments will be served during the first half an hour or so.

Price: €10.00, payable on the day

Note: there are several local restaurants in the vicinity, should attendees wish to stay on for dinner afterwards.
